Num. 22:41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.

I feel it is necessary to look at how far back this worship of the pagan god Baal really goes. (Note: Baalim is plural; many Baals: Jud. 2:11, 3:7, etc.) (Note also Jud. 8:33-Baalberith means “lord of the covenant” a god of the Philistines) (I believe it goes back to Nimrod, Semiramis, & Tammuz!) It is good also to see why God called Israel out of Egypt, when He did, and look at the Law and Tabernacle specifications in light of the false deities that were absolutely rampant in the world at that time. It was to set apart a people of a worship of the True and Living God, and through whom to ultimately bring the Messiah, His Own Son, to save the world! In our verse, we can see just how far back this stuff went. In fact, look at Gen. 36:38. See the compound name? People had a habit of naming their children this way and attaching the name of a pagan deity. See also Gen. 36:39, Ex. 14:2, Num. 25:3-5, 32:38, 33:7, Jos. 11:17, 13:17, 15:9 (where there is a city with that name in it; see 19:8 also), Jud. 3:3 (a mountain), 8:33 (god of the Philistines), & 9:1. I could go on, but you get the picture. Note also 1Sam. 12:10 where Baal and Ashtoreth are mentioned together in the Bible. In looking at these whole passages you will see the civilizations and cultures, that this name was associated with. It was rampant, and from the history I have searched out and studied, as I said before, it goes all the way back to Nimrod in one form or another, and that is the earliest of world history! This false deity was literally world wide and God was going to call out His people, and His worship, and send His Son! God wants to set Himself apart in this world, for the better of man!
Man has always worshiped something or someone (see Rom. 1:18-28 for a good description here). The devil has had his hand in twisting it and turning it away from God and to himself in one way or another… one form or another! Read Ex. 32:1-8 (connect Ps. 10619-20 & Acts 7:39-41), Is. 14:12-14, Ezek. 28, Matt. 4:9, 2Thess. 2:4, Rev. 3, 9:20, 13:1-15, 14:9-11, 16:2, & 19:20. Did you note in Ex. 32:5-6 that Aaron made an “altar” before that Baal calf and sacrifices were made there? ALL of that, they learned in Egypt, one of the earliest of civilizations! (Read Jer. 11:13 & 32:29). And did you know, that online you can read about and even join clubs worldwide that have resurrected the worship of the gods of Egypt… today? It was, and still is debauched, downward, and degrading to man! It is a filthy, depraved, sensual, deadly, devilish thing (tied also to Molech).
Baal was tied to the Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Babylonians, Canaanites, Chaldeans, Syrians, Philistines, and even into the far East. It is a debauched worship of the devil, in reality, and God wants to get people away from it… upward… to Himself!
